THE CHILDREN

By far the greatest number of our children has been orphaned by AIDS and others have no known living relatives or their relatives often are aging or ailing grand mothers or their last aunt with whom they may shelter are unable to fund their education. Some of the children have been abandoned. The Diocese of Namirembe, covering the Kampala area, Wakiso and Kalangala alone has more than 4000 orphans to care for.

THE COSTS
In the UGANDA school year there are usually three semesters.

At Primary (P) level the fee per semester is of the order of UGS 300,000 which is approximately £90 sterling and includes the cost of board and lodging as well as the education.

At senior (S) level the fee per semester is of the order of UGS 450,000 about £150 sterling.

At college and University fees can amount to up UGS 1,500,000 about £500 sterling.

At all level’s fees can be somewhat less for day students and we tend to encourage this where living, for example with an elderly grandmother, can be mutually beneficial. Such mutuality arises where there are land or animal to husband and or the relative is enlivened by the presence of the young.

Additional however, to the fees quoted above and to the costs of “requirement” including uniform, pens, paper, mattress, sheets, mosquito nets, sanitary materials. At college/University level, availability of a laptop also in some cases, provision is required during school vocations. Then too are any sickness costs. Malaria is very common. The cost of hospitalization and medication can be very high. Our welfare Officer and some of the older students assist with nursing, as is common in Uganda.

FREE SCHOOLING
The SAAKOT SCHOOL? For the moment SAAKOT is paying children in ordinary schools to maintain community integration.
